Eye View Hiking Trail

Koster, North West

The Eyeview trail is situated no more than 2 hours’ drive from Johannesburg and Pretoria between the North West Provincial towns of Koster and Rustenburg on the R52.  Both the hiker’s camp (Dapper Stapper Bush Camp) and the three self-catering chalets are situated on the crest of a hillside overlooking the vista that stretches down to the Selons River on the neighbouring farm.  From your perch near the chalets it is possible to view a multitude of game as they feed away seemingly unaware of your eyes focused on them (a pair of binoculars is a good thing to have with you.  The 3 private chalets have an almost 180-degree view –one can see Hartbeespoortdam, Olifantsnek dam and Derby in the distance on a clear day.

Eye View Game Farm offers a wide range of wildlife including kudu, rooibok, blue wildebeest, ribbok, blesbuck, steenbok, etc. 30 km dirt road for 4x4 game viewing.

On a clear day one can see Mooinooi, Hartbeespoortdam, Olifantsnek, Koster and Maanhaarrand in the distance.  Peace and tranquillity are what you find here.

Hiking Trails:

There are 2 well planned, circular day trails, setting out from a central base.  Both trails are designed to explore the farm’s diversity and different habitats. The birdlife on the farm is plentiful which is good reason on its own for you to take those binoculars along.

The Blou Wildebees Trail:

11 km

The Blou Wildebees trail is an easy pleasant hike that starts you on the slopes of a mountain with beautiful views of the farm and slowly descends you to the flats where most of the hiking is done.  There are no hectic mountains to climb but expect a hill or two, there is a bit of a climb back up the top after you clamber along a deep wooded kloof, which in summer should have water, this is a high point on the trail.  There are a few dams along the way but no rivers or streams.

The terrain on the trail is very diverse at it ranges from soft, brittle magnesium stone, to rocky and flat hardened sand.  There are a lot of loose rocks and stones everywhere, so watch out for those ankles and expect tired feet.  There is a lot of shade parts along the trail which gives a break from the blazing sun.  Among the trees on the higher areas of the farm, you may come across Blue Wildebeest taking shelter from the sun.

All along the trail short positive, Christian and motivated little messages are written on old sandals, crocs and shoes and posted to trees, so do watch out for those, it’s a nice read along the trail.  The trail is well marked but in rainy seasons it could be hidden away from overgrowth, so make sure you don’t miss them.

The Blou Wildebees trail is not suitable for children under 10 and if you do want to take your kids on the trail, please make sure they are fit and able.

The Leopard Trail

The Leopard Trail starts just a few meters away from the Blouwilde Bees and zig zag’s it’s way to pass in front of a Vodacom Tower and down through some bushveld and on to a part of service road before it winds to the left into the bushes.  Just before the 2 km mark you reach a dam, if you start early you may catch some game coming to drink water.  You veer to the right and away from the dam into the thickness of the bush.

The Leopard Trail has the same terrain as the Blouwilde Bees so expect diversity once again.  Just before the 4 km mark you will be rewarded with the most beautiful lookout point.  After this you will start descending again until you reach a kloof, on the other side of the kloof to your left is a dam, don’t miss that and you can also see the chalets from here.

You will then hike for a short while in bushveld before you get to a magnesium road and then the fun starts.  The uphill battle begins as you continuously hike up a very steep hill until you get a gravel service road and turn left, whereupon you will then find the Karibu chalet and you have reached the end.

The trail is suitable for kids but be warned that the last 1 km is a very tough 1 km.
