Wild Coast, Baleni KZN

IMPORTANT TO NOTE:
Our lodge works on a full board catering basis only.
Mtentu Lodge does not offer self-catering facilities.

Nestled on South Africa’s Wild Coast, Mtentu Lodge is perfectly situated to provide an escape from the rat race while not being too isolated. Just a 24km beach horse ride/hike/cycle or 65km drive from The Wild Coast Sun lies the untamed paradise of Mtentu, arguably the most wondrous Wild Coast destination available.

If you’re looking for the adventure of a lifetime, or just the chance to breathe in the fresh air of the magnificent Wild Coast, you have found just the right place! Mtentu Lodge is an eco-lodge owned in partnership with the local Amadiba Community.  A percentage of turnover goes directly back to the community that makes Mtentu magical.  Our lodge is the perfect laid-back and off-the-beaten-track spot within a traditional African community.

Untouched beaches, waterfalls, a turtle-filled estuary with Mkambati game reserve next door, and friendly locals ready to invite you into their homes and hearts await you at Mtentu. As a community partnership lodge, we are dedicated to promoting sustainable development and eco-tourism. Mtentu is not just a holiday but an experience, from your trip into the lodge to having a solar shower while watching whales. It’s all part of rediscovering the simple joys of life.

So shake off the dust of the city, canoe up the estuary under waterfalls, go horse riding along the beach, stay in a local village, get your fishing rod out, swim in the Indian Ocean, relax in a natural spring pool, tackle breath-taking hiking trails, enjoy sundowners at our secret rock or just grab one of our books and soak up the sun.

Our six wooden cabins can comfortably sleep 24 guests in total, 4 each. They offer truly breath-taking views of the Indian Ocean, framed by lush, sub-tropical vegetation. Imagine having your morning coffee with a view like that from a small private deck. Whatever your preference, there’s space for you! All our structures at the lodge are made of wood with walkways linking them all to limit negative environmental impact.

Cabins

If you’re looking for cabins on the Wild Coast, then look no further! We have six comfortable, rustic thatched cabins, each sleeping up to four guests. All the cabins are linked together by a wooden walkway which is lit by solar lights.

Each Cabin Features:

  • 2 Bedrooms (one room has two 3/4 beds, and one room has a bunk bed)
  • A wooden balcony with breathtaking views of the Indian Ocean and Mtentu Estuary
  • Chairs and a small table on each balcony
  • Solar powered lighting, but no power/plug points
  • We provide basic bedding and bath towels, but you are welcome to bring your own if you would like.

There are shared ablutions, a short walk along the wooden walkway, with hot showers. Easy access to the entertainment area, including the dining area, a large deck and the bar.

The cabins at Mtentu Lodge are cosy, comfortable sleeping quarters, ensuring you are well rested and ready for an incredible day of exploring the surrounding areas.

Safari Tents

We have 3 Safari tents all kitted out for a cosy nights’ sleep.  These tents are all situated close to all the lodge facilities and each have bush and sea view. A great alternative to the cabins for quick overnight stays or for guests who enjoy camping in comfort.

Each Tent Features:
  • 2 single beds
  • Linen, including towels and extra blankets
  • Deck chairs
  • We do suggest bringing warm clothes and an extra sleeping bag in the colder months.

Tented Camp

If you are making your way along the Wild Coast and need a place to rest for a night or two, we have space near the lodge to set up camp. This is NOT a formal campsite with demarcated areas, but rather a ‘find-your-spot-and-set-up-camp’ story. You are welcome to use our facilities and ablutions during your stay.

Activities:

There is no shortage of things to do when visiting Mtentu Lodge. The variety of activities make it the ideal location for friends, adventurers and even family getaways. In addition, surfing, snorkelling, spearfishing, kite boarding and almost anything else you can think of are welcomed and encouraged. Contact us to find out what equipment we keep at the lodge, or whether you will need to bring your own.

Hiking

The Mtentu and Mkambati areas offer some of South Africa’s most spectacular local hiking trails. From beginner hikes to advanced adventure hikes, we have everything. Gorge hikes, beach hikes, game hikes, waterfall hikes and cultural hikes all in one place and waiting to be explored. This is all part of the magical kingdom of Mtentu and Mkambati.

Trail Options
  • Mkambati / Strandloper Waterfall hike which goes into the reserve and is approximately 8km return. The Mkambati Strandloper hike includes viewing a shipwreck and then the Mkambati falls which drop directly into the ocean.
  • Swallowtail paddle & hike which is a 3km paddle up the estuary in a canoe and then climb up to 2 waterfalls about 1km, but it’s a climb hike so about 1 hour of boulder hopping may be expected. The Swallowtail falls hike include a canoe up the river, with a couple of waterfall alcoves en route – depending on time of year, King Fish can be spotted in the Estuary Nov – Feb, and then a boulder hike to the main swallowtail waterfall.
  • Hike from Wild Coast Sun Casino to Mkambati along the beach approx. 26km. Transfers can be organised for luggage from the casino to Mtentu R900.00 per transfer.

Paddling the Mtentu Estuary

If canoe travel is your thing, then you’ve come to the right place! The Mtentu Estuary is a sight to behold. Our local community believe that the Mtentu River is a very spiritual place and so do we. From the moment you gaze up the gorge or look down over Leopard’s Falls, you will know why our community believes the river and forest around it has a spirit of its own.  Hire a canoe or bring your own and be prepared to be amazed.

Cycling

The Mtentu area and Mkambati Nature Reserve have some incredible biking trails. So much so that cycling into the Lodge from the Wild Coast Sun has become one of the most popular ways for guests to get to the lodge for their holiday. The lodge is only 24km along the coast from the casino and it is a great experience. Around the lodge there are many day rides for all types of cycling levels. Cyclists also have the added advantage to reach further into Mkambati Reserve than the hiker with famous sites like The Superbowl within a day’s ride.

Fishing

Just a stone’s throw away from Mtentu Lodge are numerous fishing spots. Deep water rock spots, gullies, three glorious beach spots and the Sikombe estuary are all within 4kms of the lodge. Mtentu Lodge is positioned along an amazing stretch of coast with fishing spots waiting to be discovered and explored. Just another reason so many of our guests consider us to be one of the best destinations to travel to. Mtentu allows the fisherman to seek the soul-searching solitude this sport allows; you can find your own special spot on your own.

Exploring Our Beaches

Mtentu beach is boarded by a magnificent rock cliff and Mkambati Nature Reserve. This is our own private beach with access to the estuary, the open river mouth and the ocean. Good snorkeling around the rocks!

Skate Bay is is 450m walk from the lodge and is great for swimming and has a good fishing spot off the rocks. Pebble Beach is 1.5km and is as it says, a small beach purely covered in pebbles of all shapes and sizes. Skombe Beach is 4km away (a lovely walk or short drive) and is a long white beach boasting a shipwreck and red sand dunes. The Skombe Estuary is good for snorkeling and fishing. Mosquito Beach is in the Mkambati Nature Reserve about 1km away, boasting rock pools full of sea life and is great for snorkeling.

Whether you’re looking for adventure or an affordable romantic weekend getaway, Mtentu Lodge is for you! Our facilities make the experience that little more special with a fully stocked bar, decks that overlook incredible scenery and a boma where guests can relax and be merry..

Our Facilities Include:

A Fully Stocked Bar

The Mtentu Lodge bar is the heart and soul of the lodge. It’s where experiences are shared and where new friends are made. There is a wide range of drinks ready to quench any thirst, from beer and ciders to cocktails and a selection of spirits. We aim to please – so let us know if you drink anything and we will make sure to have all of your preferences in stock.

Boma and Entertainment Area

We have a large thatched, covered entertainment area and deck available to guests to unwind after an adventurous day. This is where we will share meals, trade stories and relax. Every night, you are invited to enjoy a communal bonfire where you will be able to sit back, listen to the waves crashing on the beaches below, watch countless stars as they make their way across the evening sky and perhaps hear the gentle strumming of a guitar. There are communal plug points in the boma where guests can charge their phones/cameras off of our solar power system.

Clean, Environmentally Friendly Ablution Facilities

Yes – we have hot water! The ablutions at Mtentu Lodge are communal.

We have four gas showers, two of which overlook the beautiful tropical bush the Wild Coast is famous for. We also have two solar showers overlooking the magnificent Indian Ocean, which is an experience in itself!

Our toilets operate on a septic tank system and are clean and comfortable.

We are an hour and a half away from the nearest shops and therefore may not always have everything in stock, but we do our best to accommodate your every need. If you have any specific requirements, please be sure to let us know in advance so we can make provision for this.
