About Us

The Geldenhuys family, Chris, Annatjie and their son Leonard, bought the farm in 2005 after years of dreaming and planning to leave the city, and have a more peaceful and down to earth life on the farm.

The farm was then known as Keenan’s Creek and it had 3 operational guest cottages. The two cottages, Tarentaal and Kiewiet, as well as Suikerbos on the hill had already built up some return business since the Pet-friendly Guest Farm was started in 1999. A bigger vision had to be realised. Six more cottages have been added between 2007 and 2011 and the Guest Farm is now has 9 beautiful self-catering cottages. The original house on the farm “Die Plaashuis” is also let out to guests from time to time when the Geldenhuys family in not on the farm.

The name changes rests on two family farms.  From Keenan’s Creek to Saamrus, the name change not only represents our ‘rest from the rest’ philosophy, but also reflects our memories of farm life – Saam is the Afrikaans word for ‘together’ (half of the title of Chris’ original family farm, Saamwerk) and rus means ‘rest’ in Afrikaans (half of the title of Annatjie’s original family farm, Ellasrus). So, Saamrus awaits you and your pets for a well-deserved rest together.

The secret to our success at Saamrus lies in our loyal, friendly and hardworking staff.

Like busy bees from early till late, never absent from work. More reliable and friendlier staff is impossible to find. From fighting raging veld fires on the hill in the middle of the night, carrying guest luggage up and down the hill, cleaning and preparing cottages, gardening, building fences, maintaining, and building paths, fixing and paving the road and whatever else needs to be done at Saamrus. Ever willing and helpful, they do everything with a smile while their families are waiting far away in Malawi and Zimbabwe for some money to be sent home.

Pets Welcome:

Dogs are allowed to run free when going on walks; however it is advisable to keep a leash handy just in case. Dogs that are more territorial should rather be kept on a leash while walking at Saamrus. With more than a kilometre of leafy riverside walks as well as another 500 ha of indigenous bush and veld walks, you and your dog(s) will certainly get lots of exercise and enjoyment.  Please see Terms and Conditions.

The fenced garden is to keep your dogs safe when you relax at the cottage, but not for leaving pets behind while you go on long excursions in the area. You will find that most places in the area can be visited with your dog on a leash; however it is advisable to check first before visiting certain venues. If you plan lots of excursions during your stay, rather leave the dogs at home with a friend or at a kennel.

You are welcome to take your dogs along when you eat at restaurants where we’ve made special arrangements for our guests to visit with their 4 legged family members on a leash.

Pet-friendly Walks

We allow a limited number of day walkers only on Sundays, Public holidays, and midweek so booking is essential.

No day visitors are allowed on Saturdays!!!

Saamrus offers a dream getaway for hikers, nature lovers, bird watchers and nature photographers. If you just want a relaxing stroll along the river or rather prefer a more adventurous hike for 3 hours or more, both can be done at Saamrus. Dogs are welcome to walk with you. Your canine companion will experience more space and exciting smells than he/she ever dreamed possible!!

Easy walks/strolls along the river or in the bush along the hill side:

Take a casual stroll down to the river and enjoy the tranquillity and the gentle sounds of water flowing. The steps and bridges were built by our dedicated staff to make the river walk accessible and enjoyable even in wet weather. Find a secluded spot to picnic down by the river. Take the bush path along the side of the hill. Enjoy the indigenous trees, aloes and veld grass and take a break under a shady tree. (Please avoid walking on the incoming road towards the neighbours. We are trying to give them some peace and quiet too). Explore the bush on the hill.

Longer walks on the plateau (2 – 8 km):

If you feel fit and energetic, you can walk up to 6km by walking in the paths on the plateau.  The lovely views and silence with bring you much needed relaxation and connection with nature.  You can walk on the grassy plateau with lovely wide open views and enough trees to rest and picnic in the shade, walk down the kloof with lots of indigenous shade trees or go and look at the remains of Tswana Settlements from the 1800’s.  If you stay over for a few days, there is enough routes to take to walk a different route every day.
